Starlight is a children's fantasy novel and the fourth installment in The New Prophecy story arc of the Warriors series, credited to the collective author Erin Hunter. The hardcover edition was published on 4 April 2006, followed by a paperback release on 27 March 2007. It also marked the first Warriors book to be made available as an audiobook.
The book was written under the pseudonym Erin Hunter, which actually represents three women: series editor Victoria Holmes and authors Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry, who alternate writing duties on the series.
In the story, the four Clans of warrior cats—ThunderClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, and WindClan—find a lake that becomes their new home after humans destroy their original territory. They set up a temporary camp by the shore and plan to divide territories and locate a Gathering place for their monthly truce meetings. During a meeting, ThunderClan leader Firestar promotes Squirrelpaw to warrior status, giving her the name Squirrelflight. The next day, the leaders send Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight, Crowfeather, Tawnypelt, and Mistyfoot to explore the lake and find suitable camps for each Clan.
The exploring cats discover a spot ideal for RiverClan’s fishing, a coniferous forest for ShadowClan, and a moorland for WindClan’s rabbit-chasing lifestyle. Squirrelflight, eager to prove herself, runs ahead and accidentally falls into a large circular stone hollow, which she realizes makes a perfect sheltered camp for ThunderClan. The cats report their findings, and the Clans move to their new camps the next day.
After the move, WindClan medicine cat Barkface informs Firestar that WindClan leader Tallstar is dying. Tallstar, with Firestar and Brambleclaw present, declares he does not want deputy Mudclaw to lead WindClan and instead chooses Onewhisker as his successor. Tallstar dies, and Firestar and Onewhisker announce the change, angering Mudclaw. Onewhisker appoints Ashfoot as his deputy, though he has not yet received his nine lives from StarClan. The medicine cats worry about finding a replacement for the Moonstone, the sacred stone used to communicate with StarClan.
